As Success By 6 liason to Campbell River city council the past year and a half, I’ve had a front seat in the discussions of what organizations and initiatives are hard at work taking care of the munchkins in our community. (yes, that’s me and my munchkin in the pic!) With that knowledge comes the realization that those organizations and initiatives are at risk due to funding cuts. If we win, we will use this money to support the existing projects, at a time where existing funding is being cut:
Books for Babies – each year our community fills 350 bags for new babies and is distributed through the Public Health Unit as we recognize the importance for early literacy. The bags are filled with a good quality board book, a music cd, local parenting information and a parenting handbook/guide. Volunteers fill the bags.
The Gathering Place – The Gathering Place is a drop-in family centre that offers programs for children from birth to adults, supported through many partnerships in the community. Some of these programs need assistance with supplying food for hungry children. We offer nutritional education in all of the programs and would like to continue this initiative.
CR Children’s Health Fairs – the health fairs offer free screening for vision, dental, developmental and speech to children from the ages of 0 to 5. Plenty of resources and information are available from professionals for parents to access. Free snacks and entertainment and child find at the events.
