And some people wonder why we have a Spirit Square?

Ryan Mennie at the 1st Campbell River Scottish Festival/Tartan Day

I just returned from celebrating Campbell River’s FIRST EVER Scottish Festival and National Tartan Day event.  What a great turnout by Scots and their families and supporters alike!  A big thanks to the organizers who put on the event (Ron Kerr and Scotty MacLaren included), the pipers, the dancers, and the many entertainers.  Oh ya… plenty of proud Scottish folk showing off their kilts as well.  Me…I was representing the Mennie Clan, wearing an outfit that, although it stood out, is authentic!  I did the research years ago for my appearance in a buddy’s medieval wedding party.  The outfit and shield (and spear that I left at home) are from the 12th century.

Along with recognizing the special day that we all celebrated today, I wanted to help educate some folks in our community who wonder WHY we have a SPIRIT SQUARE in Campbell River.  If you still wonder that, I’m guessing you weren’t there today!  If you chose not to attend  (or if you are a square supporter but couldn’t make it) check out this link provided by the Campbell River Creative Industries Council through their “positive gossip” website.

CAMPBELL RIVER SCOTTISH FESTIVAL/NATIONAL TARTAN DAY

THAT’S why we have a Spirit Square!  To celebrate our community’s spirit!  Today’s event had great attendance by young and old, Scottish and not Scottish, with smiles on the faces of EVERYONE.  It’s events like this that make me extremely proud to be a Campbell Riverite.  Yes, without the people, it’s just some steel poles and concrete.  With the people and the great effort of many folks in our city to put on these events, it’s a fantastic spot to celebrate ourselves and our community.  See you at the SECOND annual Campbell River Scottish Festival NEXT year!
